Pix, SPEI, RTP, FedNow, SEPA Instant, Faster Payments, UPI, Bre-B, and more: who runs each instant payment system, when it launched, its hours, and limits.
Instant payment systems now run in most large economies: Pix in Brazil, SPEI in Mexico, RTP and FedNow in the US, SEPA Instant in the euro area, Faster Payments in the UK, UPI in India, Transfers 3.0 in Argentina, and Bre-B in Colombia. Each settles in seconds, around the clock. BlindPay pays out over Pix, SPEI, RTP, and Transfers 3.0.
The table below is the reference. Every launch date, hour, and limit comes from the operator or central bank page linked next to it. Where an operator doesn't publish a figure, the cell says so instead of guessing.
Key takeaways
An instant payment system is a domestic network that moves money between bank or payment accounts in seconds, makes the funds usable right away, and runs every hour of every day.
Three things separate it from older rails:
Batch rails such as ACH, domestic wire, and SWIFT work differently. They process on business days, with daily cut-offs, and can take one to five business days end to end. Why cross-border payments are slow walks through where those days go.
Brazil, Mexico, the US, the euro area, the UK, India, Argentina, Colombia, and Singapore all run one, along with dozens of other countries. Here is the reference table.
| System | Country or region | Operator | Launched | Hours | Typical speed | Per-payment limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pix | Brazil | Banco Central do Brasil | November 16, 2020 | 24/7, every day of the year | A few seconds | No scheme minimum; each bank sets maximums per payer |
| SPEI | Mexico | Banco de México | August 13, 2004 | 24/7 | Real-time settlement | Not published as a scheme cap |

A few notes the table can't hold:
It made instant euro transfers mandatory for most payment providers. Regulation (EU) 2024/886, the Instant Payments Regulation, amended the SEPA Regulation and entered into force in April 2024.
The dates that matter, per the European Payments Council:
For a business paying into Europe, the effect is simple. Almost every euro account can now receive an instant transfer. Whether the payment actually arrives in seconds depends on whether the sender's provider uses SCT Inst or standard SEPA, which settles on business days.
A few are, most aren't. Each system above is domestic, so a payment from the US to Brazil can't ride Pix the whole way.
Two linking models exist today:
None of these links reach the corridors most Latin American payouts use. A US company paying a supplier in São Paulo still needs a leg between the two countries. That leg is either a correspondent banking chain (a SWIFT wire) or a stablecoin that settles on a blockchain and is converted to reais before the Pix leg. The hub page on real-time cross-border settlement explains how those two legs fit together.
For the final leg, a domestic instant rail is both. For the whole cross-border payment, speed and cost depend on what happens before the money reaches that rail.
Speed comes down to the slowest step. If the leg between countries takes three business days, a Pix that lands in two seconds doesn't help much. Stablecoin payout settlement times shows how a stablecoin leg plus a local rail compares by country.
Cost works the same way. The Banco Central do Brasil says Pix carries no fees for people and low cost for businesses, and ABS says PayNow is free to retail customers. The expensive parts sit upstream: correspondent fees and the FX spread. What cross-border payments cost in 2026 breaks those down by corridor.
A quick decision guide for payouts:
| Recipient's country | Fastest rail to land on | Where BlindPay pays out |
|---|---|---|
| Brazil | Pix | Pix or PIX Safe in minutes; TED in about 1 business day |
| Mexico | SPEI | SPEI in minutes |
| United States | RTP or FedNow | RTP (instant); ACH and domestic wire on business days |
| Argentina | Transfers 3.0 | Transfers 3.0 in minutes |
| Colombia | Bre-B | ACH Colombia, about 1 business day |
| Euro area | SEPA Instant | Standard SEPA, about 1 to 2 business days |
| Anywhere else | Domestic instant rail, if reachable | SWIFT (POBO/COBO), up to 5 business days |
Start from where the recipient banks and what they can receive, then pick the fastest rail that covers it. Here is the order most payment teams use:
BlindPay puts eleven bank rails behind one payout API. You create a quote against the recipient's bank account, and the account type decides the rail.
| BlindPay payout rail | Country | Settlement |
|---|---|---|
| Pix and PIX Safe | Brazil | Minutes, 24/7 |
| SPEI | Mexico | Minutes, 24/7 |
| RTP | United States | Instant, across 4,000+ US banks |
| Transfers 3.0 | Argentina | Minutes |
| ACH, domestic wire | United States | Same day to 1 to 3 business days, with daily cut-offs |
| TED | Brazil | About 1 business day |
| ACH Colombia | Colombia | About 1 business day |
| SEPA | Euro area and SEPA countries | About 1 to 2 business days |
| SWIFT (POBO/COBO) | 100+ countries | Up to 5 business days, tracked by UETR with MT103 confirmations |
Those windows come from the payment methods and cut-off times docs. They are rail windows; very high volume can stretch any of them.
How a payout runs:
commercial_quotation), the rate after BlindPay's fee (blindpay_quotation), the flat fee, and the exact amount the recipient receives. It expires after 5 minutes by default.Map your recipients by country, then match each to the fastest rail in the table above. Seven places blockchain payments beat bank rails: contractor payroll, remittances, B2B suppliers, marketplaces, 24/7 treasury, bill pay, and PSP payouts.
